Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still claim benefits while I volunteer at Skelton?People often worry about how they will make ends meet if they choose to volunteer. BTCV is a registered charity and as such you are legally entitled to volunteer full time for BTCV and still claim Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) and housing benefit, depending upon your domestic arrangements. Find out more on the Directgov website. Many (in fact most) of our staff have volunteered at some point in the past, so please feel free to call and have a chat if you are unsure about your position.
What about travel expenses?
We can cover all reasonable travel expenses for volunteers. This can be by claiming back mileage (including cycle mileage) and travel receipts/tickets, or if you're volunteering regularly and getting here by public transport, by using a metro card.
Can I volunteer at weekends or outside business hours at Skelton Grange?
Unfortunately our project only operates during weekday business hours, but there is another way you can volunteer with us...
The Friends of Skelton Grange (aka "the Slug Group") is an independent community group that supports the work we do at Skelton and would love you to join their regular "Slug Days". These take place on Sundays every few months, the dates can be found by clicking here.
