Volunteering Events

Join the 'Green Team' at Skelton Grange Environment Centre - a monthly opportunity for everyone to come along and help out with some practical tasks on our site. You don't need any experience, just enthusiasm!

Get in touch to let us know if you're planning to come along to any of the events below.  Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided but please bring a packed lunch. Wear old clothes that you don't mind getting mucky, and dress for the weather.

All events take place at Skelton Grange Environment Centre unless specified below.  Directions to the centre can be found here

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult for all events.

Friday 12th March 12:30pm - 4pm: Crafternoon!

Join us for an afternoon of craft activities at Skelton Grange Environment Centre, including a felt-making workshop where you can learn to make your own felt.

Friday 19th March 9:30am - 3:30pm: Allotment-eering

We'll be getting our vegetable garden ready for spring by getting some essential preparation work started and potting up some seeds.

Thursday 25th March 10:15am - 2pm: The Big Tidy Up at Killingbeck Fields

Volunteers from BTCV with support from Leeds City Council will work to clear litter from Killingbeck Fields - a local open space in East Leeds.  The site borders the old Killingbeck hospital site, and consists of woodland, meadows, and hedgerows.  The area is in a built up part of the city and lies on the Wyke Beck Way.  It is currently heavily littered, and we hope to be able to make a real difference in a short amount of time.  Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided but bring a packed lunch. Meet at the end of Killingbeck Drive if you'd like to join in.

Friday 16th April 9:30am - 3:30pm: Sensory Spectacular

Join us as we work to improve our sensory garden area, to make it a more exciting space that surrounds visiting children with a range of smells and sensory plants.  The day will involve work on the herb beds, as well as seeding of some new meadow spaces.

Sunday 25th April 12pm - 5pm: Slug Day

Join the Friends of Skelton Grange for a 'Slug Day', or community volunteering day, when they will be carrying out a range of volunteering tasks around the Skelton Grange site.

Friday 21st May 9:30am - 3:30pm: Adventures in the Lost World

A venture into the wild spaces behind the centre at Skelton Grange, where several hundred young trees were planted over the last two winters.  This day will involve some essential care and maintenance work to help the trees establish without being outcompeted by the surrounding plants.

Friday 18th June 9:30am - 3:30pm: The Great Big Balsam Pull

Help us out with the control of Himalayan Balsam, an invasive plant, which is colonising along the riverbank at Skelton Grange.  Lots of volunteers on hand will help us to make real progress controlling this plant before it begins to flower and seed.
