Working with Children

This course is designed to help those who are beginning to involve children in environmental activities.  We cover the basics such as working out what children need from us, how to manage group dynamics and the planning process and cover important safety requirements and work with schools.  Throughout the day we’ll introduce you to some useful games as well!

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the day you will:
  • Understand what children of different ages like and what they need from us in practical, emotional and activity terms
  • Understand different techniques for working with children including strategies for managing difficult behaviour and resolving problems and strategies for involving everyone 
  • Understand the importance of a thorough planning process from accepting a booking to evaluating an event
  • Understand the outline of the National Curriculum including Sustainable Schools and why we need to know about it
  • Understand the national legislation relating to child protection, national Codes of Practice and BTCV's procedure 17, and know of other organisations that provide information and support regarding child protection
  • Experience a range of useful games
OUTLINE PROGRAMME

9.30am - Arrival and tea/coffee

9.45am - Introductions, objectives and structure of the day

10.00am - Understanding Children  - needs and characteristics

10.45am - BREAK

11.00am - Managing Groups of Children

11.45am - Planning for tasks involving children.  Child friendly design

12.30pm - LUNCH

1.20pm - Environmental Games

2.00pm - The National Curriculum.

2.45pm - BREAK

3.00pm - Legislation and Codes of Practice

3.45pm - Feedback and finish

Please bring a packed lunch and outdoor clothes and shoes as we will be going outside during the day
