Linking environmental education activities to the National Curriculum

This event will introduce you to the National Curriculum, and currrent relevant school initiatives such as Learning Outside the Classroom and Sustainable Schools.  Aimed at environmental educators and others who are beginning to work with schools, we will to demystify the curriculum, looking at what it covers, how it is structured and terminology used. We'll look at where the main links to environmental education topics are found and how to promote your work to schools.  We’ll end the day by finding links to the activities or topics that you want to promote to schools.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the event you will:

  • Have been introduced to the terminology and structure of the National Curriculum
  • Have looked at other initiatives that schools are currently working with
  • Have experienced and studied National Curriculum linked environmental education sessions
  • Have had a chance to look at where common environmental topics may link to the curriculum
  • Have related what we have covered to your own work

OUTLINE PROGRAMME

9.45 - Arrival and Coffee/tea
10.00 - Introductions, objectives and the structure of the day.

What is the National Curriculum? – an introduction to its structure and key terminology, and a look at recent educational/curriculum developments.

Learning Outside the Classroom and Sustainable Schools– a look at these, and other initiatives, that schools deliver alongside the curriculum -  how we can we support them?

Working with the Curriculum  - we'll run some activities and find the curriculum links, with opportunities to study the curriculum in depth, so you feel familiar with it

Designing Programmes
Finding inspiration and putting activities together so they work; marketing your work to schools

Workshop – in this final session you can either work on finding curriculum links to existing programmes that you deliver already, or using our books/picking our brains to design some new curriculum linked activities for schools

4.10 - Summary, feedback and evaluation
4.30 - Finish

There will be tea/coffee breaks mid-morning and mid-afternoon. We will be outside for some of the day so come prepared!

Fees: voluntary organisations £114 + VAT; local authorities, statutory organisations and other non-voluntary £168 + VAT
