A new meadow has been created at Skelton Grange
This week, volunteers at Skelton Grange joined BTCV’s national campaign to encourage people to “spring into action”, by creating a new meadow at the popular south Leeds environmental education centre.
The campaign running from 1st May to 7th June, aims to protect green spaces, and to transform disused land into wildlife-friendly areas, by giving as many people as possible hands-on experience of improving the environment. The meadow project at Skelton did exactly that, with some volunteers being so inspired they said they would go and create their own meadow. Volunteers planted rare grasses and wild flowers on the plot of land where Skelton’s old centre used to be. Since moving to their new award-winning eco-building, which was recently commended in the Civic Trust 2006 Architecture Awards, the old site was cleared for future planting, and the new meadow seemed a perfect way of re-using the space.
Lee Gibson who led the project said “Meadows are declining in England because of modern farming techniques and this is endangering the habitats of certain wild flowers and grasses, and of insects such as butterflies. By carrying out the simple activity of creating a meadow, it will encourage a larger variety of wildlife and flowers to appear. It will also give the thousands of children who visit our centre the opportunity to see these insects and flowers up close.”
