Four young volunteers with environmental charity BTCV are heading to a garden party at Buckingham Palace this Thursday 16 July, to help highlight the work of youth organisations across the UK.
Becca Turner, Ben Partridge, Sophie Mepham and Hannah Mason have all been giving their time to run eco-activities for children at BTCV’s Skelton Grange Environment Centre in Leeds.
They will be meeting The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, alongside volunteers from youth organisations such as the Scouts and the Boys Brigade. The aim is to highlight the opportunities open to young people and to recruit more adult leaders to support these activities.
Becca Turner said: “I've been volunteering with BTCV for six months now and it has been an amazing experience! I have gained so many new skills and I feel valued working within such a supportive team. I truly believe that I am making a difference, teaching children about the natural world. I'm incredibly excited about being invited to Buckingham Palace and I can't wait to be a part of such a big event and being able to share my experiences with others.”
BTCV (formerly the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) offers opportunities for people of all ages, from under 8 to over 80, to get involved in looking after their local wildlife and green spaces.
However, many young volunteers are particularly attracted to the charity as Amy Wright, BTCV Project Officer explains: “The environment is a really strong issue for young people and they often want to give something back. Plus volunteers get access to training and qualifications, so it is a good route in for someone looking for a career in this area.”
