Newts of all shapes and sizes put in an appearance at Skelton Grange Environment Centre's monthly Wildlife Club on Sunday 30th September, together with a few toads! The children spent the afternoon pond dipping at the Centre's beautiful wildlife ponds, where they found lots of young newts, followed by a woodland walk where adult newts were spotted hiding under logs. The children learnt all about newts and their life cycles, and even played some newt-themed games!
The Wildlife Club meets at Skelton Grange Environment Centre in South Leeds once every month, and the club is supported with a grant from the Four Acre Trust Fund, which is administered by the Leeds Community Foundation. Club activities include arts and crafts, exploring the wildlife area, games, and visits to places of interest. Skelton Grange Environment Centre is a partnership between BTCV and National Grid with support from Leeds City Council.
"We all got so excited when we found so many newts in the pond, and the children were really keen to find out more about them", said Helen Pearson, this month's Wildlife Club Leader. "The newt games were much enjoyed, and some children even invented their own ones!"
The Wildlife Club caters for children aged between 5 and 15 years old, and is run by Wildlife Watch and RSPB Wildlife Explorers leaders. It is very popular with children, and so currently has a long waiting list, but to find out more visit the website www.skeltongrange.org.uk/kids_pages.html.
