Kids branching out into woodland adventures

Kids are swapping tables and chairs for log circles, pencils for sticks, and maths books for grubby hands as part of an exciting new project in West Yorkshire. Over a twelve week period, two Year 2 classes from Hovingham Primary in Harehills are regularly visiting Bradley Wood, Brighouse. Once a fortnight the children leave the classroom behind to experience a new way of learning, amongst the animals and plants of a beautiful woodland.
Instead of the usual lessons, children are encouraged to explore the natural world in a range of ways including minibeast hunting, bird spotting and building miniature villages out of natural materials. All activities are carefully designed to develop the children’s self-confidence and social skills.

“It’s amazing to watch the kids develop so much over such a short period of time. Being in the woodland rather than classroom makes a big difference for the majority of kids who come on Branch Out. We get some great results,” said Julie Howarth Pulleyn, Project Officer. “ It’s great seeing them beginning to connect with nature in a confident way.”

The “Branch Out” project is run by BTCV Skelton Grange and Groundwork Leeds with the generous support and employee involvement from the HSBC in the Community Programme.
