Hundreds of people enjoyed a great green end to the summer at Skelton Grange Environment Centre’s Open Day last weekend. The environmental education centre opened its doors to visitors of all ages who enjoyed exploring nature trails round the wildlife area, listening to storytelling in the woods, and rocking to the sounds of the Casablanca steel band.
Skelton Grange Environment Centre is an innovative environmental education project near South Leeds, which is run by BTCV in partnership with National Grid and Leeds City Council. The centre works mostly with primary schools and playschemes, running interactive, active, hands on activities to get children involved in the natural environment.
The open day was a big success, with face painting and pond dipping especially popular amongst the younger visitors, and the stall of home made cakes popular with everyone! Lots of people were fascinated by the display of pedal-powered woodwork, and a giant furry green wheelie bin was also seen being chased around the site by lots of children!
“It's been great to have another successful open day”, commented Centre Manager Caroline Crossley. “Most of our work is with schools and organised groups, so the open day is a great chance for the local community to be able to visit the centre and to have a great day out at the same time. We work with a lot of volunteers so it’s an excellent way for interested people to be able to visit and find out a bit more about what we do.” The Skelton Volunteer Group are grateful for the support of the Leeds City Council Inner South Area Committee, who helped to fund the event.
