Leaving the cars at home to promote green transport
Last week, staff & volunteers at Skelton Grange Environment Centre in South Leeds, got actively involved in Bike2Work Week 2006 by leaving their cars at home and going to work using greener forms of transport.  Staff come from as far away as Huddersfield and Castleford, and between them they used buses, bikes, trains, and even good old-fashioned walking!

Bike2Work Week is organised to raise awareness of the fact that cars are being used more and more, and are contributing to devastating effects on our environment, including global warming and more roads which destroy the countryside.  Using greener forms of energy keeps people healthy, and cuts down on carbon dioxide emissions.

Centre manager, Caroline Crossley said, “We try to be as green as possible at Skelton but it’s great to be able to get involved in green initiatives like this because it gives everyone here the chance to make more changes to their lifestyles which are better for the environment. It also promotes the message to all the children which come to our centre.”

Skelton Grange Environment Centre welcomes thousands of visitors each year to its specially-designed facilities, which include pond areas, a meadow, woodland, and willow tunnel.  Children learn about their environment in this fun and unique setting, which is a partnership between BTCV and National Grid with support from Leeds City Council.  Many projects are offered, including a school and playscheme programme, adult training, volunteer opportunities and a wildlife club for 5-15 year olds.  For more information, please call Skelton Grange on 01132 430815 or visit the website at www.skeltongrange.org.uk.
