Sort It

Spike The Sort-It team and Spike the green bin would like to welcome you to our home page.

Here you should find all the information you need about our exciting waste education project.

Don't forget to check out our resource pack: it contains three films about waste in Leeds as well as activities that you can do with your class.  You can watch the films online and download the pack, and you will soon be able to order your own hard copy: please get in touch with Chris on 0113 2430815 to put your name on the order list.

Sort-It is…

  • Funded by Leeds City Council.
  • A partnership project between Groundwork Leeds, BTCV Skelton Grange and Leeds City Council.

We aim to...

  • Provide primary school pupils and staff with the skills, knowledge and inspiration to reduce the amount of  waste that they produce at school and at home.
  • Reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill throughout the whole of Leeds
  • Spread the recycling and home composting message out to the wider school community.

Sort-It: What do we do

There are two strands to our work at the moment.

We are supporting pathfinder schools in the pilot of the Leeds Sustainable Schools Standard in tackling the waste and purchasing doorway.  This involves auditing schools waste to establish a baseline and then helping the school to develop and and implement an action plan.

We are also helping schools to set up composting schemes.  This links in with an offer available to Leeds residents where they can buy compost bins for a subsidised rate.  See the Leeds City Council website for more information about this offer.

We help schools to set up composting schemes by working with a group of children (a class or a gardening club for example) and an adult.  We train them up in how to compost and then facilitate them in setting up the scheme.  This often involves deciding where bins should be placed, making publicity material for the school and writing an assembly to launch the scheme to the rest of the pupils.

It is a great opportunity for children to take responsibility for a real life scheme that helps the environment, and is particluarly useful for schools that are already, or plan to start, growing their own food.

Everything we do is FREE to primary schools in Leeds, and if we haven't visited your school yet, what are you waiting for? Give Chris a call on 0113 2430815 or Will on 0113 2380601.
