Senses

We introduce the children to their five senses and explore how we use these to explore the world around us and to keep safe. We look in detail at all the senses and try and think about how other animals use their senses.

Day Summary

The day begins with an introduction by the day leader, welcoming the group to the centre, followed by a whole-class game or activity.

The class is then split into groups for the day's activities: Sight, Touch, Smell and Hearing, as well as doing some tasting at lunchtime!

Sight

We find out why two eyes are useful and then use our eyes to explore the outside world.  We think about how other animals use their eyes and go on a mirror walk to see things from a different perspective. We go for a walk and look at the range of different colours that we can see around us and collect small pieces on a stickyboard to take back to school.

Touch

The group use their sense of touch to feel and describe some interesting objects in our mystery bag, to see if they can tell what they are without seeing them! We also try out some "braille" to find out about how some people need to use their sense of touch to read. We then collect a range of different natural textures from the woods and gardens on a sensory scavenger hunt.

Smell

The group can have a think about which things smell nice and things that don’t and why that might be! Then we try to describe and recognise some smells in our smelly pots. Outside we use our 'Magic Potion' to help us discover nature's smells in our sensory garden and collect some of our favourite smells for a nature perfume.

Hearing

We play a game which helps us think about how our ears work and why it is helpful to have two of them, and also look at the different shapes and sizes of ears that other animals have. We then spend some special quiet time outside seeing how many different sounds we can hear, and draw our own sound map. Finally we collect some natural noises, such as crunchy leaves and snappy twigs from the woods and gardens.
