About Us
The project aims to promote an understanding of environmental issues to children and young people of all backgrounds and abilities, and demonstrate environmental good practice. It also provides specialist help, information and resources on all aspects of environmental education. Since opening in 1993, education and training has been provided through the centre for over 50,000 people and it now has a national reputation for excellence and innovation in the field. The centre is a partnership between BTCV and National Grid, with support from Leeds City Council.
Activities
During term-time we provide three days of structured activities each week, which are closely linked to the National Curriculum. Over the summer we run structured playscheme days. All of our educational activities are designed to provide children and young people with both the basic knowledge and the confidence with which to respond to the environment creatively and imaginatively, with enjoyment and enthusiasm.
We also offer a range of other activities including the Sort-It recycling outreach programme and Wild in the Woods - for full details see our education & play page.
Some of the other activities we are involved with include:
- We run the Skelton Grange Wildlife Club , a free activity club for children aged 5 to 15 which meets each month.
- We manage a six-acre site, developed with thought towards both biodiversity and play, which showcases grounds improvements and landscaping ideas for visiting groups.
- We are a part of the National Grid network of environment centres.
- We provide advice and training for teachers and conservation workers. See our training pages for more information.
- The Centre acheived Eco-centres status in February 2002 to recognise efforts to reduce our environmental impact and improve our sustainability.
